What's Shopify Market

Recently Shopify has released a brand-new feature called Shopify Market which you can create tailored online shopping experiences for different buyer segments. You can do this by creating markets that target specific countries or regions, or you can group countries and regions together to simplify your expansion efforts.

If you have access to Shopify Markets immediately after signing up to Shopify, you will have the following markets types:

Primary market: is created at default and the main country or region that you will sell to. This is often your home or domestic market, which is determined by your store's address and base currency in Settings > Store details.

Other Markets include:

+ International market: is created for you when you first access Shopify Markets. It includes a curated list of popular countries or regions that merchants similar to you also sell to.

+ Single-country market: contain only one country or region. You should create single-country markets to sell to country or region that you have a specific targeting strategy for.

+ Multiple-country markets: contain more than one country or region. For simplicity, combine countries or regions with similar targeting strategies together into multiple-country markets.

Countries you don't sell to: All other countries or regions that don't belong to another market. Customers in these countries can’t check out from your store.

How to add a Market

From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Markets.

Click Add Market.

Enter a Market name. This name helps you identify the market within your Shopify admin, and isn't displayed to customers.

Click Add countries/regions.

Add the countries and regions that you want to include in this market.

Click Done, and then Save.

Below is an example to add a multiple-country market in Other Markets

Shopify admin >> Settings >> Market >> Add Market

Add Market name as you want >> click on + to add countries/regions

Example: Add some countries Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, India to Asia Market name. From this Market, you can easily manage languages according to Domain/Subdomain or Subfolder for your customers in those countries in Asia Market.

Options to manage domain and language in Markets

There are 3 options to manage domain and languages in Shopify Market:

Primary domain only (Enable for Primary Market only)

This market uses the primary domain for your online store

Domain or subdomain (Enable for Other Markets)

Assign a custom domain to host a localized experience for this market.

Subfolder (Enable for Other Markets)

Set folders under your primary domain for each language in this market.

How to make Markets compatible with Transcy

Add target languages in the app
Select Markets corresponding to each Advance language (required)
Publish target languages on switcher

Please be advised that only Advance language can work with Shopify Market since this language source is provided from Shopify system.

* You will be required to assign each Advance language to corresponding market that you have set in Shopify Market. Otherwise, you won't be able to add those Advance languages to the app and the Add button is dissable.

* The app will base on your market selection when adding target language in order to sync data with Shopify Market so please kindly check carefully this step.
List of markets in-app are collected from markets in Shopify admin.

* By doing above steps, you don't need to tick languages for market in Shopify admin directly anymore that might help you save time and easier manage language within the app backend.

* To edit market or domain setting in details, please go back to your Shopify admin for further action

You can ask support from Shopify for further advice with market setting in Shopify admin or can have a reference from our tips below

Below is an example to manage language in Primary Market in case you want to set up directly in Shopify admin

From your Shopify admin >> Setting >> Market >> Primary Market >> Manage

Domains and languages >> Manage

Scroll down to Market languages >> select languages that you want to show on your target customer's Market region >> Save

Similarly to Subdomain and Subfolder in Other Markets, do the same steps for target language that you want to set up.

Basic concepts about currency in Shopify Market

Manage the pricing in local currencies for each Market with Shopify Market - only stores who are using Shopify Payments can use this feature. For a list of supported countries, refer to Shopify Payments requirements.

Especially, stores using Shopify Payment and already set up Shopify Market that can get multiple currencies work on the checkout page. Click here to learn more.

For Primary Market, your primary market is determined by your store currency in Settings > Store details. So for example your store base currency is USD then it will auto target USD to your Primary Market. However, if you do not use Shopify payment, you can't manage its pricing in Settings.

* Please be noticed that all changes that you make to your store affect your primary market by default.

Like you change store default currency to another currency, your Primary Market will be updated accordingly to suit your Market.

Example: Change from Euro to USD, then your Primary Market would be updated to United State

For Other markets, if all countries or regions that had a local currency available were previously enabled in your payment settings, then these countries and regions are added to your International market with those local currencies enabled.

More concern related to currency in Shopify Market, please kindly contact Shopify support for better advice.

Currencies on Transcy Switcher

We'll sync and auto publish currencies on Switcher when switching to corresponding Markets once added target currencies in-app are local currencies available and used in regions in your Markets.

Therefore, once you have done set up Shopify Market, the status of Market will be indicated as "Yes". Otherwise, it shows as "No" so please kindly go back Market setting in Shopify admin to complete setup.

In case you have any change in Market setting related to Currency, but you see it's still not updated to the app. Please kindly wait around 1 minute, there will be a toast to notice when the synchroizing progress gets done.

Note: For Free plan which is only available 1 target currency in-app, if local currency used in regions in your Market is different from your target currency in-app, we will hide the switcher automatically to avoid visitors from regions in those Markets getting confused when landing on your store page.

Currency Settings (format, exchange rate, rounding)

In countries/regions which have been set up in your Markets, all currency settings such as format, exchange rate, rounding will work and follow according to Settings that you have set up in Shopify Market. So please kindly contact Shopify support if you want to adjust/manage currency settings.

In countries/regions which have not been set up in your Markets, all currency settings will work based on our Currency setting in-app. For more details about currency setting in Transcy can be found here.
